


About the Course
Drawing and Painting Architecture and Modern Interiors with Sophie Newnham. This term will be all about colour. We will be focusing on how to use tones, shades and bold colours to describe a space, creating dynamic paintings.
We will learn
Weeks 1-6
Architecture - Luis Barragan
Graphite - Monochrome
· We will learn how to manage space on the page, drawing out shapes and angles.
· Looking at shading and perspective. Planning out our drawings using verticals, horizontals measuring and angles.
· Making a distinction between foregrounds and backgrounds.
· Understanding negative space.
Acrylics - Colour
· Understanding and mixing the acrylic palette. Chroma. How to utilise tones and colour opposites to give a 3D impression on a flat surface.
· Drawing and colour mapping out a Luis Barragan building.
Medium: acrylics on paper or canvas.
Referencing images from Luis Barragan, colour-blending inspiration from Georgia O’Keefe and Christabel Blackburn.
Weeks 6-12
Interiors - photographic images
· Drawing out an interior vignette using a viewfinder. Marking out a framed perspectives direct onto canvas.
· Option to use oils on canvas. Understanding oil paint.
· Modern interiors- painting a room set- tables, chairs, lights, walls with references to 8 Holland Street images.
· Bold colours. The relevance of tones and colour opposites, understanding how to bring life to our work through colour.

Over the 12 week course you will:
- Fine tune colour mixing paint on a palette.
- Understand composition, scales and proportion when drawing and painting.
- Gain confidence with tones and highlights and observing angles.
- Create a series of paintings in oils.
