About the Course
 

Drawing and Painting the Portrait with guidance by Sarah Teare.
 

We’ll begin with the basics of drawing the portrait, before moving on to colour theory and building layers in oils. We'll learn from old masters and underpainting techniques to create depth in oils. Over the course, you’ll work with a live model for one session, then continue developing your portrait from photographs—gaining confidence in composition, colour mixing, and the unique qualities of this beautiful medium.
 

There’s also the option to bring your own project and work with individual guidance from the tutor.
 

We will learn:​​
 

- Measuring and Proportions.
- Tonal and mark making techniques.
- Colour theory and mixing with oil paints.
- Painting exercises working in a limited palette.
- Painting on canvas.
- Working from a photo and from life.

 

Over the 10 weeks course you will:

- Work towards a well developed Portrait on canvas.
- Improve observational skills and gain confidence with proportions.
- Gain further insight in observing different tones and shades on the Portrait.
- Develop an understanding of colour mixing with paint and explore colour temperatures.
- Gain confidence working with watercolours and oil paints, learning about consistency and application with different brushes.
